Dr. James Dobson once said, “Respect is intended to operate on a two-way street.” The key words are “intended to operate.” It would be great to live in a “two-way street” world where everyone felt respected, not just for their accomplishments but for their humanity. We don’t live in that world, and I can only manage my side of the street.
I can’t control how others behave or react. I am only responsible for what I do, say, and write. I choose to show respect regardless of reciprocation. Here are 5 reasons to respect others no matter what.
1. Nobody is perfect.
This is obvious, but some people will still strive for perfection in order to please others. If your respect is only earned after someone achieves at a high level, you’ll feel the temptation to withdraw your respect when the output declines. Respect effort, not just results.
2. We don’t know everyone’s struggles.
Has anyone ever snapped at you in line at the grocery store? Or cut you off in traffic while speeding by? Or sent what you perceived to be a rude text? Try not to retract your respect. We don’t know if that person just got awful news, is going through a health crisis, or struggling in some other way. Respect that they may be carrying a heavy, unspoken burden.
3. They could need a friend.
That same person may just be wishing for connection. They may need another friend but put up walls to avoid being hurt again. Maybe that can be off-putting if you’re sincerely trying to fill that need. Don’t withdraw respect if their loneliness or hurt makes getting close to them feel difficult. Press in and be respectful.
4. You can be an example to others.
It would be great if our respect for others was always reciprocated. But, if it’s not, does that mean we stop trying our best to show respect? Your decision to respect people who aren’t returning the favor models something important—that respecting others doesn’t require conditions. We can honor others’ dignity even if they don’t honor ours.
5. God created them.
People earn trust, but they don’t need to earn respect. God made them. That’s their entire résumé. The same God who strung stars in the sky, hung the moon in its place, and molded the first man from the dust of the earth is the one who formed each person in his or her mother’s womb. You were created on purpose, and that’s special. So was the person you have a hard time respecting. This amazing fact alone means everyone is deserving of respect as a person.
