Unconditional Love

2 min read

In today’s Family Minute we talked about how many marriages appear strong on the outside but in reality they are in danger of falling apart. We talked about a few things that would keep that marriage from capsizing and eventually sinking. One of the things we mentioned was unconditional love, and oh how important it is…

So then what is unconditional love? What does it mean to unconditionally love your husband or wife?  Well, first of all, we have to understand that the word love is an action verb…it is something you do toward another person.  Love is not just a feeling, it is a decision…a choice.  It’s an act of the will to be patient, kind, humble, hopeful, giving, faithful and trusting.  Love is all about giving …giving selflessly and sacrificially to another person.

The hardest thing for us to do is to love unlovable people, especially our spouse…it’s easy to love them when they are kind, sweet and lovable, but we are also to love them when they are unlovable.  We are to love them unconditionally…no matter what they do or say, no matter what…doesn’t mean we have to like what they do or say, but we are to love them unconditionally.

Remember, when we got married each of us made a choice to love our spouse for life…for better or worse.  We made a choice to love them even when they’re unlovable.  Men, we need to be able to say to our wives… “I love you when you don’t wear makeup.  I love you when you have PMS.  I love you when you go shopping and max out our credit card.  I love you when you tell me to put down the remote. I love you no matter what.”

Wives, you need to be able to say to your husbands, “I love you when you have gas in the house.  I love you when you snore.  I love you when you don’t put the toilet seat down.  I love you when you get lost and won’t ask for directions. I love you no matter what.”

That’s unconditional love.

Until next time,

Mark
