Making Each Child Feel Special

< 1 min read

It’s so important to encourage and uplift our children.  Doing so gives them a sense of accomplishment and confidence in who they are and what they do.  Recognizing them for something they’ve said or done should be done on a regular basis. One way to do that is by honoring them in front of the whole family.  When our children were growing up, there were several things that my wife, Susan, and I did to honor our kids.

One time, I made up the “My Eye’s on You!” award.  I took some cardboard, attached some old ribbon and had an awards ceremony—honoring my kids for doing something good that week.  My oldest daughter got the award for joining the church, my younger daughter for doing more than what was expected, and my son for catching a pop fly in baseball.  I even gave my wife an award for our many years of marriage.   The kids acted like it was totally uncool… but that night, all their ribbons were displayed in their rooms! So keep your eyes on your family and “catch” them doing something good.

We also had a red plate that said “You Are Special.”  When one of our children did something nice for somebody, when they got good grades, or had something to celebrate, they got to use the plate. The rest of the family would take turns during our meal and each give that child a compliment.

These are just a couple of ways to encourage, uplift and honor your kids.  Do you have any ideas you could share with me?
