Practice What I Preach

2 min read

In my blog post on October 5, I wrote about the 5 Things Men Must Know about Women.  My wife, Susan, asked me last night if I actually do these things.  After doing a self-evaluation, here are my thoughts on how I do on each of the 5 things… Also, on the right, check out my wife, Susan’s, evaluation of how I do in each of the 5 areas…
Mark’s Self Evaluation Susan’s Evaluation of  Mark
1. Women want to feel loved.
I do this fairly well.  I say, “I love you.” to Susan every night before we go to bed, even if we just had an argument.  I sometimes hug and hold her when she’s upset.  I definitely pursue her in our relationship.
1. Women want to feel loved.
I know you love me, but in times of conflict, your tendency is to tell me what I need to do rather than reassuring me that everything will be ok.
2. Women want to feel understood.
I don’t do this well.  I often don’t understand how Susan feels, and I don’t stop for long enough to just ask her and listen.  I’ll give myself a “D” in this department.
2. Women want to feel understood.
We definitely have a tough time with this. I speak in generalities and you speak details. We often misunderstand each other.
3. Women want to feel emotionally secure.
Susan knows that I’m always there for her, but sometimes, she does not always feel emotionally secure with me. That’s probably because I tend to have more of a critical spirit.  I’m constantly struggling to be a better encourager.
3. Women want to feel emotionally secure.
Definitely feel secure. You are very loyal to me and focused on me. A+
4. Women want to feel listened to.
I used to be really bad at this.  Susan used to share something with me and I just charged in and told her how to fix it.  I’m learning—over the years—how to identify with her and be a better listener.
4. Women want to feel listened to.
Like in your #1, you want to fix it by telling me what I should do. I just want to vent, talk, and be encouraged.
5. Women want to feel beautiful.
Susan absolutely knows that I find her beautiful!  No need to comment  further on this one!
5. Women want to feel beautiful.
You are naturally great at this and are blind to all my physical faults. A+
