6 Principles Parents Can Learn from Olympic Athletes

What separates Olympic athletes from other great athletes is that they are unusually driven.  Their passion for the game propels them to make sacrifices few others will.  For example, an Olympic athlete:

  1. Studies her sport and techniques rigorously.
  2. Works hard every day for many years to be the best he can be.
  3. Never ever gives up on herself or her teammates.
  4. Understands that he can’t always control the results or the outcome. Sickness, injury, and conditions can create insurmountable challenges.
  5. Realizes that her work comes with pleasure and pain, victory and defeat.
  6. Always hopes as he strives for the gold.

We can apply these same principles as parents.  When we choose to be relentlessly focused on our goal – raising successful children who love God and love others – we’ll make sacrifices and push through walls.  “No pain, no gain” is a popular phrase for athletes.  It’s no different in parenting.  It’s all about temporarily sacrificing ourselves for the ultimate prize of our kids flourishing in life.

What are some other lessons you’ve learned from watching athletes compete in this year’s Olympic Games?
