Overtraining in Athletics

Kids are starting sports earlier and training harder. The pressure and incentive to win and be the “best” are greater than ever. What are some of the dangers that can occur in overtraining young athletes and how can we look for signs of this unhealthy overtraining? Well, I brought in Dr. Peter Armstrong, Chief Medical Officer of Shriners Hospital, to get the answers to the questions that all parents of any athletes need to know.

What seems crazy is that my 6 year old boy starts tackle football August 1 (yes Sunday is the first practice because they can) and they are going 5 days a week a couple hours a day. We'll see how it goes and keep a close eye on his attitude and any injuries. I see the good and bad of playing so young but it's all our kids that are driving it because as parents we're trying to get them to play tennis, golf and other sports. In search of balance…
